The ex-Manchester United keeper and current BBC pundit affirms that Chelsea's Champions' League triumph with Di Matteo got in the way of the signing.

Peter Schmeichel, ex-Manchester United goalkeeper and British television pundit, revealed on BBC1 that José Mourinho had an agreement with Roman Abramovich to manage Chelsea this season. He explained that the team's Champions League triumph obliged the Russian to hold on toRoberto di Matteo, the interim substitute for Villas-Boas.

"Abramovich didn't want Guardiola, he preferred 'the Special One'. Abramovich and Mourinho had anagreement for his return, but Chelsea's win in the Champions League got in the way", he affirmed in a TV debate featuring the ex-players John Hartsonand Martin Keown.

Hartson pointed out that Guardiola had decided to take a sabbatical year and for that reason he didn't take charge of the team, although suggested that "one day Pep will manage Chelsea." "Abramovich didn't see Di Matteo as a long-term coach", he added.
