Controversial City striker may be tempted by a return home to be closer to his pregnant girlfriend - while Fergie could be back in for Sneijder.

Inter Milan want Mario Balotelli back at the San Siro.

Manchester City have confirmed that Inter were represented at last Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Ajax.

And sources in Italy claim that Inter’s sporting director Piero Ausilio opened transfer talks with his new City counterpart Txiki Begiristain after the 2-2 draw.

The Milan giants want Balotelli to lead a renaissance at the club as they look to replace ageing players. Owner Massimo Moratti has earmarked the 22-year-old as his No.1 target – after allowing the controversial Italian striker to join City in a £24million deal just over two years ago.

City boss Roberto Mancini has been a big champion of Balotelli’s talents, despite a series of problems with the player that have not been well received by the club’s owners and executives.

City rejected an approach from Paris St Germain in the summer after his exploits for Italy at Euro 2012 and Balotelli has been named in the prestigious Balon D’or nominations for European Footballer of the Year.

But he is now behind Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko in Mancini’s plans and is still waiting for his first league goal of the season.

Balotelli will also become a father for the first time in the New Year and would welcome the chance to be closer to his girlfriend Raffaella Fico, who lives close to Milan.

He is also building a house there.

Inter’s rebuilding programme has seen a posse of highly paid, ageing stars move on of late.
