Jorge Higuaín, the player's father, agreed terms for a contract extension with Mourinho. The forward secured a salary increase of 700,000 euros, taking him from 3.8 million euros a year to 4.5 million.
Gonzalo Higuaín's contract renewal began to take shape at the end of last season, on the 22nd May. It happened at the offices of the Santiago Bernabéu, after a few weeks in which 'Pipita' flirted with the idea of a move after winning the Liga title (he pretended to say goodbye to his teammates at the celebrations and had offers from Juventus and Manchester City on the table). The player's father Jorge Higuaín agreed terms with Mourinho for an extension of his contract with the club. The Argentine secured an salary increase from 3.8 million euros to 4.5 million and he's to lengthen his tie to the club until 2017 or 2018 (his old contract runs out in 2016).
Real Madrid were planning to announce this agreement at Christmas, but with Higuaín out injured, the club is thinking about making the contract official as a gesture of goodwill towards a forward who's in his seventh season in Spain. He's had a tricky ride since his arrival in 2007. At the moment, just when the number '20' has regained José Mourinho's total confidence (he's played 125 minutes more than Benzema and started one more game than the Frenchman) he's picked up hamstring injury which will keep him off the pitch for 21 days (at the very least he'll miss five matches: three in the Liga, one in the Champions League and one in the Copa).
At the start of this campaign, Higuaín turned his role in Mourinho's system round. Benzema ended the 2011/12 season as the Portuguese's preferred striker (he started in all of the big matches then), but once again the Argentine overcame adverse conditions, like when he was out with a spinal hernia or when he had to compete with Ronaldo, Raúl, Cassano, Van Nistelrooy, Huntelaar or Karim. 'El Pipita' is a top fighter.
