Sources in Spain have revealed that the 41-year-old is ready to end his year long sabbatical and wants to work in England or Germany.
Pep Guardiola has put Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United on managerial alert.
The former Barcelona boss is ready to open talks about coming out of his self-imposed exile.
Guardiola walked away from the game at the end of last season, deciding he needed a 12-month break.
But sources in Spain have revealed that Guardiola, 41, has put into place a timetable for his return and instructed his advisers to open talks with interested clubs in January.
It is believed Guardiola wants to work in either England or Germany.
Chelsea, City and Bayern Munich are his preferred options at the moment.
But United are already planning for life without Sir Alex Ferguson and Guardiola is known to feature highly on their list of men capable of succeeding Old Trafford’s most successful manager.
Ferguson refuses to reveal his retirement plans, but the Spaniard’s current availability will put pressure on United to make a move rather than allow him to take over at a rival Premier League club.
The arrival of former Barca executives Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristan at the Etihad Stadium has sparked - speculation that they have been tasked with bringing Guardiola with them – despite the fact that Roberto Mancini recently signed a five-year contract.
Mancini will meet Begiristan this week for critical talks.
Mancini said: “When Txiki starts to work here next week, we can talk about the future.
“This is very important. We have talked by text message and when he comes next week we will speak.
“I am happy that Txiki is here as the sporting director and I think we can work well together.”
As Sunday Mirror Sport revealed last week, Mancini is looking for assurances that he retains the full backing of the club’s Abu Dhabi-based owners.
Roberto Di Matteo landed the Champions League for Chelsea after taking temporary charge from Andre Villas-Boas last season.
But Roman Abramovich will not hesitate to act if he fails to deliver this season and the availability of Guardiola will only add to the pressure.
