Messi has scored more goals than 16 Primera División teams

Only the three teams at the top of the table have scored more than the Argentine. All of the other outfits, except Málaga who have also scored 25, are below the 'culé' star.

Leo Messi continues to add to his historic goal tally for a calendar year. With his two goals at the Camp Nou in Barça's 4-1 win over Atlético Madrid, it's now 90 that the Argentine has scored in 2012. He's the Liga's top scorer for this season with 25. That's half of his total haul last season notched up in only 16 matches, which leads one to believe he could beat the half century this time around.

With the strikes against Atleti, the 'culé' star has now scored six consecutive doubles in La Liga BBVA (against Mallorca, Zaragoza, Levante, Bilbao, Betis and Simeone's team). In fact when the Argentine has found the net this season, only once hasn't been enough. In all the Liga matches he's scored in (12 of 16), he's done so at least twice, totaling 11 braces and one hat-trick. Valencia, Granada, Sevilla and Celta are the only teams who haven't seen 'The Flea' celebrating against them.

Leo's account is simply scandalous, and even more so when we compare it with the goal records of all the teams in the Primera División: only the three teams at the top of the table (Barça, Atleti and Madrid) have scored more than the Argentine. All of the other outfits, except Málaga who have also scored 25, are below Messi in this ranking.

His goals also constitute practically half of the 54 that Barça have scored. If seems reasonable to say that if it wasn't for Leo, the Catalan club wouldn't be thirteen points ahead of Madrid and nine ahead of Atlético right now, with the Liga looking all but decided in December.

The three-time Ballon d'Or winner is running out of records to break. The 'Bomber' Müller is now in his wake, and he only has Chitalu ahead, with his amazing 107 goals in Zambia. It won't happen this year, but who can say about the future? This boy is capable of anything...
