"The supporters are free to do whatever they want. My job, our job, is to play well and to win. That's all I care about. I always try to be focused on what I'm doing, nothing else."

Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata has admitted that he and his team-mates are wary of the fact that Rafa Benítez is deeply unpopular with their club's support and said he respects their opinion, but reiterated that the players are fully behind their manager.

The Blues have gained just two points during Benítez's three games in charge and lost 1-3 toWest Ham United on the weekend.

On Wednesday they face Nordsjaelland atStamford Bridge in their final game in Champions League Group E and must beat the Danish side and hope that Shakhtar Donesk beat Juventus in the other Group E game if they are to progress to the next round, and avoid becoming the first ever team to be knocked out of the group stages of the tournament the year after winning it.

"I'm not deaf, so we were aware," said Mata in a pre-match press conference when asked about Chelsea fans' attitude to Benítez in his first three games.

"The supporters are free to do whatever they want. My job, our job, is to play well and to win. That's all I care about. I always try to be focused on what I'm doing, nothing else."

The Spain international acknowledged that results must improve but insisted the team and fans must unite behind their new coach if they are to have any hope of salvaging something positive from this season.

"If we want to win, if we want to lift trophies this season, we have to be all together, fight as a unit in the team. The players have to be professional and work no matter who the manager is of the team. We have an owner. We have people who are working, trying to do their best for this club and, as a player, I just have to work with the manager we have now. Now it's Rafa."

"We are trusting him because Rafa wants the best for the team. If we want to win the Club World Cup, or the Premier League or the other competitions, we have to do better. Rafa is a very experienced manager and he's trying to help us. We're trying to help him."

And Mata believes that Wednesday's game, against bottom side Nordsjaelland, is the perfect time for Benítez's first win of his era as Chelsea boss, and is confident Shakhtar can beat Juventus, allowing the Champions League holders to remain in the competition.

"I still believe we are going to get through because we can win and so can Shakhtar. I want to think in a positive way. Obviously, we are in this moment arriving in a bad position in this game because we didn't do well enough".
