Messi: 10 goals in 12 games to break Müller's record

Messi has taken a little over 11 months to break Pelé's goal record for a calendar year, set in 1958. ''The king' scored 75 and 'the Flea' is now on 76 with the two he got in Mallorca.

Lionel Messi is 'the Flea' that dethroned Pelé, and now he's intending to smash the record of 'Torpedo' Müller. Perhaps he doesn't dwell on these things; but the fact is that in Mallorca, the Argentine scored the two goals which broke Pelé's record tally for a calendar year. The Brazilian scored 75 in 1958 (66 with Santos and 9 with Brazil). Messi has now reached 76 for 2012 (64 with Barça and 12 with Argentina) and he's chasing down Gerd Müller, who notched up 85 in 1972 (72 with Bayern Munich and 13 with Germany).

It's a race against the clock for the Barcelona forward, with his team having only 12 matches remaining this year (providing they go through to the next round of the Copa del Rey, that is). The 22ndDecember sees the last of those against Valladolid; the deadline for Messi to have got the 10 goals he needs to beat Müller. Nine, if things don't go quite so well, to equal him.

Average

Scoring 10 goals in a little over a month could seem a tall order, but if anyone can do it it's Messi. This year the Argentine has averaged 1.2 goals a game, meaning if he stays on track he'll exceed the German's total with ease.

In fact, the most outrageous thing is that Leo could end the year having scored 90 times. The countdown starts tomorrow in Riyadh, where Argentina are to play a friendly against Saudi Arabia.

Among the top 10 goal scorers

Thanks to his double in Mallorca, Messi has joined the top 10 goal scorers in the Liga's history, at only 25 years of age. The Barça player has scored 184 times in 225 official matches. He should soon go past Santillana (186 in 461 games) and Mundo (195 in 231). To overtake Pahiño, the next man on the list this campaign, Leo will have to score 26 goals in the 27 Liga matches that remain this season. That's something that can't be ruled out with the rate he knocks them in.
