Perhaps he doesn't dwell on these things; but the fact is that in Mallorca, the Argentine scored the two goals which broke Pelé's record tally for a calendar year. The Brazilian scored 75 in 1958 (66 with Santos and 9 with Brazil). Messi has now reached 76 for 2012 (64 with Barça and 12 with Argentina) and he's chasing down Gerd Müller, who notched up 85 in 1972 (72 with Bayern Munich and 13 with Germany).
It's a race against the clock for the Barcelona forward, with his team having only 12 matches remaining this year (providing they go through to the next round of the Copa del Rey, that is). The 22ndDecember sees the last of those against Valladolid; the deadline for Messi to have got the 10 goals he needs to beat Müller. Nine, if things don't go quite so well, to equal him.
